Decodable Books (overview)

ACET Phonics Scheme is supported by a number of phonetically decodable texts* for each sub-phase (sub phases have been merged together to ensure children have a range of texts to enjoy as their fluency develops, children will not be issued with a book until they have learnt those specific sounds). These books are aligned with the order of teaching of phonics in the ACET Phonics scheme.

Each book is fully decodable at every stage of the scheme, and they are composed entirely of words that are made up of grapheme-phoneme correspondences that children have learned up to that point. Also included are a small number of common exception words (Tricky/High Frequency Words) that children will have learned as part of the lessons up to that point, though these are kept to a minimum as advised in the DfE phonics validation guidance.

There are also a small number of ‘topical words’ which are specific to that book. These are found on the inside cover of that book, these would need pre-teaching or adult support to read. Practising with decodable texts such as these, will help children experience success and learn to rely on phonic strategies.

To note: We, as an academy trust, have developed the progression and alignment to the Oxford University Press books without the support of Oxford University Press.

For each phase, there are recommended books which have been carefully matched to ensure pupils are reading books to ensure they are consolidating and only reading books containing phonemes they have been previously taught.
