Reading for Pleasure

Reading should be at the heart of any curriculum and is a key driver throughout ACET academies. We aim for every child to become a fluent reader and from the start of their journey with us, pupils are supported to develop a love of reading.

We encourage all classrooms to be language-rich environments where adults talk with children throughout the day. We recognise the more children take part in conversations, the more they will understand once they can read and the more vocabulary and ideas they will have to draw on when they can write.

Although the main aim of the ACET Phonics programme is to teach children the skills they need to read fluently and independently, we recommend that all pupils have access to other reading based activities such as group story times, role play and exploring poems and rhymes.

Our Phonics scheme supports this ethos further by asking schools to provide all children accessing Phonics lessons with an additional ‘reading for pleasure’ book to take home and enjoy each week.
