Phase 5

Phase 5

On entry to Phase 5, pupils will be able to read and spell consonant blends and words containing more than one syllable.

In Phase 5, pupils will be taught alternative pronunciation for graphemes they already know and learn new graphemes which are also pronounced the same as ones they already know. They will be supported to choose the appropriate graphemes when spelling as they will become familiar with the alternative pronunciation. Some of the previously taught tricky words will now become decodable and pupils' fluency will increase as they begin to read the grapheme faster than in the other phases. The ACET Phonics and Early Reading Village supports pupils by including all the alternative pronunciations in a house to support spelling.

The structure of the lesson remains the same throughout the phase as the previously taught phases using revisit, teach, practise and apply.

Phase 5a

This phase lasts for 1 week and includes the vowel sounds a, e, i, o, u as individual graphemes and alternative pronunciation from phase 2.

Phase 5b

This phase lasts for 2 weeks and include the split diagraphs for the vowel sounds and alternative pronunciation for c, g, y, y.

Phase 5c

This phase lasts for 2 weeks and pupils are introduced to 9 alternative graphemes for some of the phonemes they have already learnt including ay as in play and ea as in beach.

Phase 5d

This phase lasts for 2 weeks and pupils are introduced to 6 alternative graphemes for some of the phonemes they have already learnt including au as in haunt and aw as in draw

Phase 5e

This phase lasts for 2 weeks and pupils are introduced to 7 more alternative graphemes for some of the phonemes they have already learnt including ie as in field and a as in wand.

Phase 5f

Phase 5F is a consolidation of all the alternative graphemes phoneme representation of all the phases. By the end of phase 5F, pupils should be fluent readers who only need to use segmenting and blending for unfamiliar words. They will be equipped with the skills to decode and segmenting to spell using appropriate grapheme choices for words containing alternative graphemes.
